Stourbridge Hybrid Engine Flywheel

Introduction

At WDB Ltd, we are proud to have been involved in the original manufacture of the hybrid engine flywheel for the Stourbridge Class 139 Parry People Mover between Stourbridge Junction and Stourbridge Town. This line has been operational for many years. However, it has not always been for people movement. It was previously a transhipment line between Stourbridge Town and the canal. Many people know this as the Stourbridge Town branch line. This is famous for being the shortest stretch of rail line in Europe.

When was the Class 139 introduced to Stourbridge?

The Class 139 Parry People Mover has been in use on the Stourbridge Town branch line since June 2009. This line provides a crucial transport link between Stourbridge Junction and Stourbridge Town.

Why is the Class 139 People Mover a good choice?

The lightweight rail vehicle has been successfully in service for many years. All things considered, the reason for this is because its flywheel energy storage means it is highly energy-efficient. Producing low emissions of pollutants and noise due to the prime movers running on gas, diesel or hydrogen, rather than overhead wires. This in particular mean we are increasing the amount of environmentally friendly travel in the region. Therefore reducing the carbon footprint for the country. More recently:

The flywheel has recently undergone refurbishment and balancing at our site. This refurbishment included the manufacture and installation of a new driveshaft, the removal and replacement of bearings, and dynamic balancing to ISO grade G2.5.

The reason servicing and balancing is important is because it also plays a large part in power consumption and energy efficiency. We provide a large amount of balancing and condition monitoring services to many industries. To find out more about the benefits of balancing, as well as the other services we provide, please visit our balancing page and latest news page.

The importance of impeller balancing and inspection

Impeller balancing and inspection are imperative to the smooth operation of your machine. The extremely high rotational speed of an impeller means that if it is vibrating, it could be a result of misalignment and unbalance. This can cause critical damage to other components and bearings.
